The best ways to spend Australia Day Long Weekend

2018 Australia Day on the Gold Coast
The Queensland Life

Broadwater Parklands Fireworks Event

Celebrate Australia Day with a bang – fireworks and food truck feast for the family. Spend the day soaking up the sun then head to the Broadwater Parklands from 4pm and fill up from the all-nations food truck feast.

Be part of the celebrations that unite our nation at the Gold Coast Australia Day event at Broadwater Parklands. The event will feature a bunch of local music talent including sets from The Twine, Sunset City and Cheap Fakes, and the kids are sure to enjoy the JJ Richards Adventure Zone.

This free event kicks off at 4pm and concludes at 8pm with a spectacular fireworks display, set to rival New Year's Eve. The colourful presentation will feature new live performance components not seen before at this event. Crowds will be wowed by fly boards, jet skis and jetpacks, while the fantastic fireworks light up across the Broadwater.

Pack your picnic rug and gather your family and friends for a wonderful afternoon of food, fun and spectacular fireworks.

In The Know Tip: There will be no parking available at Broadwater Parklands on the day however, Southport is exempt from parking charges on public holidays. Parking areas close to Broadwater Parklands include Cloyne Road, Marshall Lane, Mal Burke carpark and Carey Park carpark.

Have a BBQ at Paradise Point

Paradise Point is the best place to celebrate this day with BBQ facilities and a recently improved massive playground for the kids.  Water sports such as paddle boarding and water cycling are available as fun activities for the family – and don’t forget to bring a cricket set to play on the sand or at the park itself.

A BBQ is a quintessential Australian pastime – so there’s no better day to fire up the hot plates than on Australia Day itself. Rather than shopping for your own BBQ or picnic, take advantage of your luxury surrounds by tasting the treasures of Australia’s finest produce with Executive Chef, Matt Hart’s custom picnic basket. You can organise this through our friendly concierge team.

Pacific Fair Skate Fest

The team from Stoke Skateboarding are taking over Pacific Fair from 15-28 January to host skateboarding lessons, craft workshops and an open skate jam. The workshops teach everyone – from beginners to experienced skateboarders over the age of 5 – incredible skills all free of charge.

Sight Burleigh Heads’ world-famous surfing event

Secure front-row seats within Burleigh Heads natural amphitheatre as The Flight Centre Burleigh Pro takes over the shores this Australia Day weekend. Watch as some of the best surfers in the world battle it out for the valuable World Surf League Qualifying Series, and take advantage of your time in Burleigh Heads by exploring the local fashion boutiques and bars and bistros on James Street.

Insider Tip: Our Concierge team encourage you to book a private transfer to the event as parking on the day will be incredibly difficult. Guests of InterContinental can book their transfer through the team located in the front lobby.

Experience Australia Day at NightQuarter

Friday 26th January will see NightQuarter theme its marketplace with Australia Day motifs including thong throwing, lamington eating, egg and spoon races and more. There will be family-friendly performances by The Aussie Magician and Cozy the Koala and epic live music performed by Australian band, The Twine, live on the main stage.
